Two former New Albany standout guards announced the next step in their respective basketball careers over the weekend.
Josh Jefferson, a 2016 NAHS grad, announced he will transfer to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay while Sean East, a 2018 NAHS grad, declared his commitment to the University of Massachusetts.
Jefferson, who spent two years at Lake Land (Ill.) Community College and last season at Illinois State, announced Friday on Twitter that he will complete his career with the Phoenix.
“I felt like it would be the best situation. I felt like they valued me the most,” Jefferson said Friday when reached by phone.
The 6-foot-2 guard averaged 8.7 points and 2.1 rebounds in 21 games, four of which he started, for the Redbirds last season. However, he missed 11 games during the middle of the season due to a broken clavicle.
Jefferson said Green Bay was a school that he considered coming out of Lake Land, where he averaged 22.8 points per game as a sophomore.
The Phoenix went 21-17 last season and tied for fourth in the Horizon League, which it led in scoring at 81.3 points per game.
“Green Bay has a very fast-paced, high-scoring style,” Jefferson said. “I feel like playing fast. I like that style of play. It fits me well.”
Jefferson said he looks forward to sitting out the 2019-20 season to work on his game.
“I see it as a positive, a chance to get better, get stronger and learn more about the game,” he said.
Meanwhile East announced his intention to join the Minutemen in a video posted Sunday on Twitter.
East averaged 18.2 points, 4.7 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 steals per game his senior season for the Bulldogs. He spent this past season at Combine Prep (N.C.) Academy, where he averaged 20.2 points, 8.2 assists, five rebounds and 2.4 steals.
He’ll be eligible to play right away for Matt McCall’s Minutemen. UMass went 11-21 and finished in a tie for 12th in the Atlantic 10 this past season.
