CLARKSVILLE — The previous two weeks were ones that Providence and Coach Gene Sartini would like to forget.

However, the Pioneers followed up blowout losses to Charlestown and Jeffersonville by thumping visiting Gary Roosevelt 61-18 last night at Murphy Stadium.

In what was billed as a ground vs. air matchup, Providence prevailed by amassing 422 yards rushing and 26 first downs.

“I think that in the previous couple of weeks our effort wasn’t there,” said Sartini, whose squad improved to 5-2 with the win. “Our game against DeSales (a 36-20 win on Sept. 7) was kind of the turning point for us. They were a big physical team that beat us up pretty good and the effort wasn’t there the next two weeks. Tonight I was encouraged by what I saw.”

Providence was ready for the Panthers’ (3-4) offensive arsenal, which included senior quarterback Harrison Yancey, one of the leading passers in the state of Indiana. Yancey completed 24-of-44 passes for 325 and three scores, but was also picked off three times, with two leading to scores.

Johnelle Hardin intercepted a Yancey pass intended for target Amos Littles with 2:37 left in the first half, and returned it 99 yards for a score that made the score 28-6, Providence. And, with just over a minute left in the game, Michael Hornung picked one off and took it 30 yards into the end zone for the final score of the game.

“I thought our defense came in and hit hard and made some big plays,” Sartini said. “Again, I thought the effort was good on that end.”

Hardin also ran for 65 yards and two scores, including a 53-yard run in the third quarter. But he was the Pioneers’ third-leading ground gainer. Zach Ernstberger picked up 119 yards on 11 carries and Ethan Cook rushed 22 times for 228 yards and four touchdowns.

Sartini said the Pioneers have put the Jeffersonville and Charlestown losses behind them and are now looking ahead.

“I’m fine with being 5-2,” he said. “We got by New Albany and Floyd Central and have played some pretty good football this year. So I’m pretty happy with where we’re at.”
