Jeffersonville beat Louisville Butler, 57-43, and Columbus North, 62-49, at Johnson Arena on Wednesday to claim the first Jeffersonville Girls’ Holiday Classic.

More importantly, winning two games in one day is something Jeff (11-1) will have to do again in February in its plans to claim its first regional title since 1998, Jeff coach Chad Gilbert said.

“It’s the first time in 10 years that we’ve had two wins in one day,” Gilbert said. “It is the regional format and we beat two formidable opponents, and North is a team that we might see again at the regional.”

The Red Devils played arguably their best quarter of the season in the first period, who entered the contest with a 9-2 mark and Class 4A’s No. 15 ranking.

Jeff hit its first five field goals to take an early 10-2 lead. Jeff’s first four field goals were assisted by four different Devils.

Jeff bumped the lead up to 22-6 before a Jocelyn Hamilton 3-pointer at the buzzer made it 22-9 at the end of the first.

In the period, Jeff shot 7-of-12 from the field and turned the ball over just once while forcing five North turnovers.

“We played pretty well (in the first),” Gilbert admitted. “Our focus was on defense and not turning the ball over in the first quarter.”

After a sloppy second quarter, in which Jeff turned the ball over six times, the Red Devils pulled away in the third and fourth periods. The big push came at the end of the third when Jeff finished on a 10-2 run, spurred by two straight buckets from Jalynn McClain to extend the advantage to 50-36.

A Brooke Valentine bucket midway through the final period gave Jeff its biggest lead at 60-43.

McClain had game highs with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Teammate Lakin Roland scored 16 points and added four rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. But the sophomore duo was far from the only stars on Wednesday.

Valentine scored six points and led the Devils with five assists. Jeff’s Shanice Gholson had eight points, three steals and a pair of blocked shots, and teammate Alexis Samuel had her best performance of the season with 10 points, seven rebounds and a steal.

“She keeps getting stronger and healthier,” Gilbert said of Samuel, a senior. “She’s another spark off of the bench for us.”

North center Andrea Behling led the Bull Dogs with 13 points. She also had four rebounds and two blocked shots. Jeff held North’s leading scorer, Courtney Larson, to seven points on 2-of-7 shooting. Her first points didn’t come until the final seconds of the first half.

After a cold first half, Jeff outscored the Bears 20-7 in the third quarter to take control of its semifinal matchup.

The Red Devils hit 13 of their 19 second-half field goal attempts to pull away from Butler (8-4).

McClain led Jeff with 13 points and Gholson added 12. Roland and Jamice Williams, who hit Jeff’s only 3-point shot of the day, pitched in with 10 points apiece for the Red Devils. Jeff hit 9-of-14 free-throw attempts in the victory.
