The Henryville softball team raced to a pair of quick leads. But in the end, the Hornets came up short in their bid for the school’s first sectional championship since 1990 with a 6-3 loss to host Lanesville in the final of the Class A sectional Wednesday.

The Hornets (8-11) led 1-0 in the first inning and 3-1 in the third. But the Eagles rallied both times before grabbing the lead late and hanging on as they won their third straight sectional title.

Henryville got the early lead as Kelcey Pierce was hit by a pitch and stole second base before finally scoring on an error.

After the Eagles had tied the game at one, Amanda Cleveland ripped an RBI double in the third to put the Hornets back in front. Cleveland then came in later in the inning as she scored from third on a botched pick-off play by the Eagles.

But Lanesville plated two in the bottom half of the stanza and then pushed home the go-ahead run in the fourth and two more runs in the sixth.

Henryville had one final rally in the seventh as the first two batters in the inning — Brooklyn Guthrie and Stephanie Page — reached on singles. But Lanesville star hurler Allison Horton retired the next three batters in order to clinch the win.

Horton struck out 11 in the win for Lanesville. Kelly Byrne took the loss for Henryville, striking out one.
