2019 HYR Intermediate 50/70 state champions

The Highlander Youth Recreation Intermediate 50/70 All-Star team won the Indiana State Tournament on Sunday. HYR will open up play in the Central Region Tournament on Friday afternoon in Kalamazoo, Mich. The team is comprised of Peyton Durham, Brady Bilsland, Rollin Shirer, Travis Williams, Tate Timberlake, Wesley Taylor, Alex Schuler, Clayton Schroeder, Carter Jacobi, Seth Newkirk, Justin Early, Masen Moravec and Kayden Linares. It is coached by Rich Moravec, Eric Jacobi and Todd Shirer.

KALAMAZOO, MICH. — After having its Saturday game postponed, Highlander Youth Recreation won a pair of pool-play games in the Intermediate 50/70 Central Region Tournament Sunday. 

HYR beat Johnston (Iowa) 12-7 Sunday morning, then came back to beat Roberto Clemente (Ill.) 11-1 later in the day.

In the victory over the Iowa state champion, five HYR players had two or more hits. Alex Schuler went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, while Kayden Linares was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Also for HYR, Clayton Schroeder went 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored while Justin Early added two hits and two RBIs and Wesley Taylor contributed two hits and scored four runs. 

HYR pounded out 17 hits in its win over the Illinois state champion. Seth Newkirk led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Also for HYR, Rollin Shirer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored; Schuler was 2-for-4 with two RBIs; Taylor was 2-for-4 with a run scored; Masen Moravec went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Early added a pair of RBIs. 

Brady Bilsland picked up the win on the mound. He allowed one earned run on no hits while walking one and striking out six in 3 1/3 innings. 

HYR (3-0), one of only two undefeated teams in the 10-team tourney, is scheduled to face West Portage (Mich.) at 5 p.m. Monday in its final pool-play game. Tournament play begins Tuesday.
