HYR beat Johnston (Iowa) 12-7 Sunday morning, then came back to beat Roberto Clemente (Ill.) 11-1 later in the day.
In the victory over the Iowa state champion, five HYR players had two or more hits. Alex Schuler went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored, while Kayden Linares was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Also for HYR, Clayton Schroeder went 2-for-3 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored while Justin Early added two hits and two RBIs and Wesley Taylor contributed two hits and scored four runs.
HYR pounded out 17 hits in its win over the Illinois state champion. Seth Newkirk led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, home run, two RBIs and two runs scored. Also for HYR, Rollin Shirer was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored; Schuler was 2-for-4 with two RBIs; Taylor was 2-for-4 with a run scored; Masen Moravec went 2-for-2 with a run scored and Early added a pair of RBIs.
Brady Bilsland picked up the win on the mound. He allowed one earned run on no hits while walking one and striking out six in 3 1/3 innings.
HYR (3-0), one of only two undefeated teams in the 10-team tourney, is scheduled to face West Portage (Mich.) at 5 p.m. Monday in its final pool-play game. Tournament play begins Tuesday.
