INDIANAPOLIS — A 13-run third inning helped the New Albany All-Star team rally from an early five-run deficit to beat Dyer 18-12 Saturday in an 11U Little League State Tournament elimination game at Decatur Little League.
In a rematch of a Thursday pool-play game, which New Albany won 7-1, Dyer plated four runs in the top of the first and second innings en route to an 8-3 lead. New Albany, however, plated one run in the bottom of the second to get within four before erupting for a baker's dozen in the bottom of the third to go up 17-8. It cruised from there to earn a spot in Sunday's state semifinals.
New Albany will face Brownsburg, which beat NALL 8-5 Friday, at 1 p.m. Sunday in one of the semis. If New Albany wins it will play in the state final at 4 p.m.
Four players had two or more hits to lead New Albany, which totaled 16. Duke Beckort led the way, going 3-for-3 with a double, triple, four RBIs and two runs scored. Also for New Albany, Dane Sprigler went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored; Gavin Jackson was 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Braxton Mayfield went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Camden Wright, Max Watson and Zach Medlock added two RBIs each, while Wright, Watson, Jackson Murphy and Andrew Ciszewski scored two runs apiece.
Lucas Mauk picked up the win on the mound. He allowed four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in the final four innings.
