LAWRENCEVILLE, GA — New Albany graduate Josh Rogers suffered the loss on the mound as host Gwinnett downed Norfolk 3-1 in International League action Thursday night.
The left-handed pitcher allowed three earned runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out three in five innings for the Tides, the Baltimore Orioles' Triple-A affiliate.
The Stripers plated single runs in the first, third and fifth innings against the former University of Louisville standout.
Rogers threw 67 pitches, 45 for strikes. He induced seven groundouts and one flyout against the 22 batters he faced.
ELLIS, GENERALS WIN
JACKSONVILLE, FLA — Jeffersonville graduate Drew Ellis went 0-for-2, but scored a run and walked twice to help Jackson (Tenn.) to a 5-0 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in Southern League action Thursday night.
Batting seventh and playing third base for the Generals, Ellis walked in his first two at-bats before striking out and grounding out in his debut with the Arizona Diamondbacks' Double-A affiliate.
BATS DROP SEASON-OPENER
TOLEDO, OHIO — The Louisville Bats couldn't hold onto an early lead and lost their season-opener — as well as the debut of new manager Jody Davis — 10-5 at Toledo in IL action Thursday night.
The Bats built a 4-0 lead through 4 1/2 innings before the Mud Hens scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Louisville increased its lead to 5-3 in the sixth, but Toledo tallied five runs in the seventh and added two more in the eighth to hand the Bats their fifth consecutive season-opening loss.
