The Course: Wooded View Golf Course, 2404 Greentree Boulevard North, Clarksville, Ind. 47129. Pretty close to the retail hustle and bustle of Veterans Parkway and Lewis and Clark Parkway, adjacent to Lapping Park.

The Signature Hole: No. 15, a par-4. It’s 375 yards from the back, 346 yards from the blue tees and 246 yards from the red tees.

Description: Accuracy is key on this hole, according to Pro Mark Cappola. The fairway, like a lot of fairways at Wooded View, is tightly constricted by trees on either side. The next obstacle is going to be a ball-swallowing water hazard that sits directly in front of the green, and there’s a greenside bunker left and another one behind the green as well. Oh yeah, and there’s tall heather growth behind the green on the right if you need one more challenge.

“It’s one of the most feared and interesting holes on the golf course. The hole requires a straight drive because of woods left and right – hitting a tee shot 220 to 250 yards of length is a must,” Cappola said. “This leaves you with a second shot from 125 to 170 yards. The higher handicap golfer has an option of playing from several sets of tees which will soften the tee shot but still impose the difficulties of the second shot.”

About Wooded View: Wooded View is owned by the town of Clarksville and operated by its parks department, making it really the only municipal course in the area. The 18 holes consist of about 6,500 yards from the tips, and its proximity to Lapping Park make deer, wild turkey and red fox sightings almost a virtual certainty as you’re playing through. Years back, hitting a ball into the numerous trees that line the fairway was akin to being thrown in jail with the key tossed into Silver Creek. Improved course management cleared out the brush and now playing out of the trees for the weekend hacker is a lot more palatable.

Recent years have seen major renovations to its clubhouse and driving range, and Cappola said the course is adding new and rebuilt tees, improving ADA accessibility and installing a triple row irrigation system this fall.

Rates are a bargain for the experience you get at Wooded View. Regular rates for 18 holes and a cart during the week are $34, and that rises to $39 on the weekend.
