Jeffersonville held on to boys sectional bragging rights Friday with a third straight Jeffersonville Sectional title, but Henryville left Blair Field with three sectional champions, matching the Red Devils.
Red Devils hurdler Drew Nelson added a 300-meter hurdles title to go with Victor Dailey's high jump win and Josh Weirs' pole vault victory Thursday, helping Jeff's team point total grow to 108, enough to beat second-place Southwestern with 87.5. Silver Creek was third with 79.
On a day with temperatures into the low 90s, the Red Devils weren't sweating the outcome too much, but Jeff coach Preston Gray said his team made sure to put pressure on themselves to perform well.
"We expected to do well. We had pressure on ourselves. The kids have been working hard and we're pleased with their efforts," Gray said.
Nelson, a sophomore, broke 40 seconds for the first time in the 300 hurdles. Jeff freshman Maliek Bush took fourth, just a tenth of a second behind Henryville's Logan Owens for the final regional-qualifying spot.
"My coach and my father have always told me I need to sprint off the start. I've always kind of jogged off the start. I ended up trying to do that to see what happened," Nelson said.
Owens of Henryville will go to regional in three events after winning the 110-meter hurdles Thursday. He was also a part of the Hornets' third-place 400-meter relay.
"My start off. I got in there, relaxed and it felt perfect," Owens said of the 110 hurdles. "My start was perfect and everything else went smooth. My body fell in right where it was supposed to go. We had some nice handoffs. We worked on those well this week and it just clicked."
Jayke Youell won the 1,600 for Henryville on Thursday in a time of 4:50.16, about 14 seconds shy of his best. His fellow distance runner Kris Miller followed that up with a win in the 3,200 on Friday.
"I felt slow. It was really hot. I had cotton mouth the whole time," Miller said.
The Hornets, who won the Southern Athletic Conference championship, took sixth as a team.
"This is the best team Henryville's had in a while," Youell said.
Charlestown won long jump and discus titles. Bo Braunecker added a runner-up shot put result, while Avery Duncan advanced to the regional for the Pirates with a third-place finish.
Silver Creek's regional-bound boys are Easton Messer in the 100 meters, Jacob Lucas in high jump and Scott Hagan Jr. in pole vault. The Dragons' A.J. Smith just missed a regional spot in the 800, finishing fourth in a time of 2:02.97, less than tenth of a second behind Scottsburg's Tristian Rowland.
Madison's Daunte O'Banion won the 400 in a blistering time of 48.52, which ranks among the top times in Indiana this season.
