KALAMAZOO, MICH. — Justin Early’s walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted Highlander Youth Recreation to an 8-7 win over Keystone (Neb.) on Friday afternoon in its first pool play game in the Intermediate 50/70 Central Region Tournament.
HYR led 6-0 after two innings before Keystone rallied for seven straight runs. HYR tied it up in the bottom of the fourth. The game was then scoreless until Early’s game-winning — and game-ending — hit.
HYR will face Johnston (Iowa) at 6 p.m. tonight in its second pool-play game and Roberto Clemente (Ill.) at 3 p.m. Sunday in its third game.
Friday, HYR tallied two runs — one on Kayden Linares’ RBI-single — in the first inning. It tacked on four more in the second thanks to RBI hits by Linares, Wes Taylor and Clayton Schroeder.
Keystone plated two runs in the third, then five in the fourth to take the lead. HYR knotted it up in the bottom half of the inning. That set the stage for Early’s eighth-inning heroics.
HYR pounded out 10 hits in the win. Schroeder and Alex Schuler led the way, each going 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
Also for HYR, Taylor reached base three times (a hit and two walks) and scored three runs while Linares and Rollin Shirer scored two runs apiece. Linares also had a trio of stolen bases for HYR, which totaled 12 steals.
Masen Moravec, HYR’s sixth pitcher of the game, picked up the win on the mound. He gave up one hit while walking two and striking out three over the final 1 1/3 innings.
